Cats Don’t Fetch – FAQ

Here are the most common questions from players — and the answers your cat would give you if they could be bothered.

Will my cat actually play?

Most cats will do something—but that’s the charm. The game is designed around natural feline behaviour, so even lazy, shy, or independent cats can trigger points just by being themselves.

Do cats have to do “tricks”?

Nope! There’s zero training required. The game is based on everyday cat actions: looking up, stretching, flicking a tail, walking past something, sitting down, batting at a toy, etc. If your cat can loaf, flop, stare, or wander off, they can play.

What if my cat doesn’t respond within 30 seconds?

Then no points are scored — just discard the card. The real chaos comes from waiting, watching, and laughing at their total refusal to participate.

What if the cat leaves the room?

That counts as Game Over in most variants! Add up the points and declare a winner. Cats decide when the round ends — not the humans.

Is the game suitable for older or very chilled cats?

Yes! That’s why we created See It, Score It cards, which reward gentle, natural behaviours—no running, jumping, or effort required.

Can we play with more than one cat?

Absolutely. The chaos doubles (or triples). You can attempt actions with whichever cat is most willing.

Can kids play?

Yes. Kids love being the ones who get the cat’s attention!

How long does a game last?

Usually 10–15 minutes
or until your cat decides it’s over.

Do I need treats or toys?

Not required, but helpful!
A wand toy, shoelace, or treat can make certain challenges easier.

Is it safe for cats?

Yes.
You never force or pressure your cat — you just observe and encourage.
If your cat doesn’t want to play, you pause the game.

Does the game work if my cat is lazy / shy / stubborn?

Yes!
The game was designed by cats who embody all three.

Do I need a timer?

No, but it helps. You can just have another player count to 20, or play in a casual way until someone says, “that cat is never going to put a paw in the air.”
A phone timer or a loose 20–30 second count is fine. We even made a timer for you on our website you can find that HERE.

How many people can play?

2–6 players works best.

What if my cat does something that sort of matches the card?

Use house rules or let the cat decide.
If in doubt: if the tail twitches, no points.

Can I use this game as training?

Yes — gently.
It’s enrichment, not obedience.
